Drumroll please… here it is… Never make a big decision in February.  That is it.  That is the principle. Never make a big decision in February.   Bank on it; live by it; chew on it.  Done… Oh… what does it mean?!?!  Good question.

I have found that I am tempted to make large and sometimes unwise decisions when I am in a bad season of life.  It feels like the grass is greener, the weather warmer and the sugar sweeter “over there” when life is a struggle.  If I am emotionally, financially and spiritually stressed, I tend to wrestle with having the wisdom necessary for good decision making, and I would guess that this is true of all of us to some degree or another.

So, I have made it a principle to forgo making big decisions (if I am able) when I am in a funk or a bad spot or a spiritually dry place.  When my time with God has been consistent and rich and I am in a healthy emotional place, I make better decisions.

So what does this have to do with February?  Well, it really isn’t about February.  Yes, it is true that in most years, I have found the weather and dreariness of February makes me a little bit more antsy and a little less wise.  I start pining for beaches, warmth and new adventures.  So, in my mind, February became synonymous with a rough season of life.  This year has been lovely, weather-wise, so these feelings have been a touch less acute.  Nevertheless, the principle is about that state of mind, body, and soul that we are in and the best time for decision making.

IT IS FINALLY TIME FOR SNOW CAMP 2012!!!!

After months of planning and talking– Snow Camp is here!

#1 Arrive at the church no later than 3:15– the bus and van will depart at 3:30– you don’t want to miss it!

#2 ALL paperwork AND $$ MUST be turned in to Carol by 9 am on Thursday morning.

#3 Don’t forget to leave ALL electronics at home– including ipods and cell phones. All leaders will have cell phones in case of an emergency.

Where: Daytona Beach, Florida (I know, what a boring and lame location, right?)

Why: To be challenged in your walk with Christ, to be refreshed physically and spiritually, to build relationships, and to have a blast!

When: July 8-14, 2012

How Much: Cost is not fully determined yet but the conference itself (includes conference cost, hotel stay, all breakfasts, most lunches, and transportation) will not exceed $279 per person.  I am hopeful that I can figure out a way to offer partial scholarships to students who serve during soccer camp week.

As I have thought about the temptations we face, I was struck again today at how different things tempt us at different times and seasons of our lives.  Something that was so appealing to us at one age may lose its luster, only to be replaced by another temptation every bit as dangerous.

When I was little, the temptation was to sneak and watch a television show that I was not supposed to- like the Smurfs.  But as I aged, my “tastes” for temptations changed.  The Smurfs became passe, I became far more interested in more sophisticated things like cookies or eventually girls or cheating in school.  And then school ended, and things changed some more.  Now, I find that some of the most appealing temptations are far more subtle than they were when I was a kid, but those temptations are lurking there nevertheless.

On the way home from picking my son up from kindergarten today, I thought perhaps I was seeing a sign of the temptations to come when I asked him about his day.

Me: “How was your day?”

5 year old: “Good, Sadie tried to hug me today at recess”.

Me: “Oh, well did she hug you?” (Thinking it is cute that he has the ole Lemke charm)

5 year old: “No she stayed on the teeter-totter instead, she just said she would try to hug me”

Me: “Oh ok.  Well, did you want her to try to hug you?” (Here was the temptation question)

5 year old, “Yeah!”

Me: (That was quick and emphatic) “You did?!?!?” (Starting to freak out just a little)

5 year old, “Well, yeah…  I like running away from her.”

Wheeew… disaster averted.  I guess we are still in the Smurf zone for now with him.  For some reason that is a relief.  Still, his temptations are significant to him and one day will most likely change.  Yours certainly have.

According to him, this tunnel is the space that exists between pseudo, shallow relationships and real, meaningful relationships.  Like the Proverb Adam looked at last week on the difference between companions and real friendships, we all face the choice to pursue real friendships or to live on the surface with people.  There is a tunnel that exists with our families, co-workers, small groups, childhood friends etc.  In those relationships there will be awkward moments and hurt feelings.  The question, will be, “Will we slowly but surely move through the tunnel of chaos toward real relationships, or will we sprint back to the safety of the surface?”

As a church, particularly in our small groups, we will be faced with this tunnel in the upcoming weeks and months.  Every real relationship takes work.  Every group takes adjusting.  We all face chaos.   The issue will be whether or not we will “push through” to the other side.

Why: To be challenged in your walk with Christ, to be refreshed physically and spiritually, to build relationships, and to have a blast!

When: July 8-14, 2012

How Much: Cost is not fully determined yet but the conference itself (includes conference cost, hotel stay, all breakfasts, most lunches, and transportation) will not exceed $279 per person.  I am hopeful that I can figure out a way to offer partial scholarships to students who serve during soccer camp week.

Dear High School Students and Parents,

A common question that I have been receiving lately is “what are we doing this summer?”  While it seems crazy to begin thinking about summer plans before Christmas is here, I think it is helpful for planning purposes.  After all, summer will be here before we know it.

I have had many conversations with students and parents about ideas for our high school summer event/trip.  As I have received feedback from students, a common theme that has become clear to me is that our students would like to stay away from a mission oriented trip this summer.  While I am passionate about students serving, I agree that this summer is not the right time for another mission trip.  Many of our students are coming off a trip toJamaicathat required a significant amount of time and preparation.  On top of that, it has been my goal this year to plan a service opportunity for our group on a monthly basis.  With those things considered and when I consider that our students are coming off of a long year of school and extra-curricular activities, I think they will be most benefited by something other than a mission trip.  I have spoken to a number of students to gauge interest in attending a Christian summer camp and it is simply not high on their interest radar.  So, I moved on to the idea of another wilderness trip but kept coming back to the truth that this type of trip does not interest a number of students in our group.  In the end, I wanted something that would be extremely valuable for teens in a spiritual sense but also something that would be fun and refreshing after a long year.  I was really excited to find the option that I found.  Allow me to introduce you to Student Life @ The Beach.

Student Life @ The Beach exists to help teenagers know Christ through His Word.  Their goal is to elevate God’s Word so that life-change can happen within in the community of teenagers.  Their events are Christ-centered and focused on biblical teaching, engaging worship, relevant drama, relationship building, and also happen to be a lot of fun.  The speaker for the week is Louie Giglio and the worship leader is Chris Tomlin.  Need I say more about the quality of this event?!!!

The conference is held in Daytona Beach, Florida.  We will take 2 days to drive to the event.  Our stop both ways will be at a local church in Marietta, GA.  We will leave on Sunday morning, July 8^th and return Saturday, July 14^th.  We will stay at a local hotel in Daytona during the conference.  Each day of the conference will include a morning and evening session as well as a mid-day small group Bible study.  I would encourage you to make plans to go on this trip.  It should be an awesome conference with challenging talks from God’s Word and a time of much needed refreshment.

The total cost has not yet been determined but will not exceed $279 (not including dinners and meals while traveling).  I am working on a way to offer partial scholarships to students who serve at soccer camp this summer.  Please keep in mind that summer camps often cost between $300 and $400 (LakeAnnthis summer is $429).

Dear High School Students and Parents,

A common question that I have been receiving lately is “what are we doing this summer?”  While it seems crazy to begin thinking about summer plans before Christmas is here, I think it is helpful for planning purposes.  After all, summer will be here before we know it.

I have had many conversations with students and parents about ideas for our high school summer event/trip.  As I have received feedback from students, a common theme that has become clear to me is that our students would like to stay away from a mission oriented trip this summer.  While I am passionate about students serving, I agree that this summer is not the right time for another mission trip.  Many of our students are coming off a trip to Jamaica that required a significant amount of time and preparation.  On top of that, it has been my goal this year to plan a service opportunity for our group on a monthly basis.  With those things considered and when I consider that our students are coming off of a long year of school and extra-curricular activities, I think they will be most benefited by something other than a mission trip.  I have spoken to a number of students to gauge interest in attending a Christian summer camp and it is simply not high on their interest radar.  So, I moved on to the idea of another wilderness trip but kept coming back to the truth that this type of trip does not interest a number of students in our group.  In the end, I wanted something that would be extremely valuable for teens in a spiritual sense but also something that would be fun and refreshing after a long year.  I was really excited to
find the option that I found.  Allow me to introduce you to Student Life @ The Beach.

Student Life @ The Beach exists to help teenagers know Christ through His Word.  Their goal is to elevate God’s Word so that life-change can happen within in the community of teenagers.  Their events are Christ-centered and focused on biblical teaching, engaging worship, relevant drama, relationship building, and also happen to be a lot of fun.  The speaker for the week is Louie Giglio and the worship leader is Chris Tomlin.  Need I say more about the quality of this event?!!!

The conference is held in Daytona Beach,  Florida.  We will take 2 days to drive to the
event.  Our stop both ways will be at a local church in Marietta, GA.  We will leave on Sunday morning, July 8^th and return Saturday, July 14^th.  We will stay at a local hotel in Daytona during the conference.  Each day of the conference will include a morning and evening session as well as a mid-day small group Bible study.  I would encourage you to make plans to go on this trip.  It should be an awesome conference with challenging talks from God’s Word and a time of much needed refreshment.

The total cost has not yet been determined but will not exceed $279 (not including
dinners and meals while traveling).  I am working on a way to offer partial scholarships to students who serve at soccer camp this summer.  Please keep in mind
that summer camps often cost between $300 and $400 (Lake Ann this summer is $429).

Snow Camp has been re-opened! Pastor Adam has increased the amount of transportation to Snow Camp. There are now 6 additional spots available. If you want to go, you MUST pay a $60 deposit and submit a completed Lake Ann registration form. You may pay your deposit on the GBC website (under Event registration on the home page) or you may put a check into one of the black mailboxes. One is outside of Pastor Adam’s office, the other is in The BOX.  Registration forms may be faxed, or emailed (scanned) to the church office.

Summer 2012!!!

 High School Summer Trip Info:

What: Student Life @ The Beach

Where: Daytona Beach, Florida (I know, what a boring and lame location, right?)

Why: To be challenged in your walk with Christ, to be refreshed physically and
spiritually, to build relationships, and to have a blast!

When: July 8-14, 2012

How Much: Cost is not fully determined yet but the conference itself (includes conference cost, hotel stay, all breakfasts, most lunches, and transportation) will not exceed $279 per person.  I am hopeful that I can figure out a way to offer partial scholarships to students who serve during soccer camp week.

Registration: $60 due January 31^st.  I am planning on taking the first 12 students who pay their deposit. More Info: Please see the informational letter at the end of this letter.

I am in a coffee shop in Ann Arbor at the moment with 3 tables of middle aged women to my left, 2 college aged young men to my right and a large crew of seniors behind me.  It is Ann Arbor at its diverse finest.  With a quick turn of the head I see multiple races, age groups and probably education as well.

As I look at all these faces, I am asking myself, “which of these folks would NOT be better off as part of our church?” Seriously!?!? What is your answer to that question where you are sitting?

If there was a place where the real truth of Christ was presented understandably among the din of the University and there was an opportunity to connect not only to Him but also to other people in a healthy way, wouldn’t that better for all of these people?  I like our church… check that… I love our church.  I love it for much that it is, and I love it for what it could be.  And I love it for THESE people.  They don’t know what they are missing.

What is our job once we have looked around?

Uh oh… a bunch of rowdy high school students just walked in…

Here is the question raised by this pastor, “Is insisting that a store clerk throw out Christ’s name in a thoughtless cultural greeting any meaningful kind of redemption of the reality that what we’re encouraging is hollow cultural Christianity and what we’re doing is buying stuff?”

Good stuff, eh?  I will follow up his question with my own.  Shouldn’t our outrage or frustration, when it comes to holiday greetings, be aimed more at the continual, empty, flippant, consumer driven use of the phrase “Merry Christmas” rather than someone simply saying “Happy Holidays”?  Isn’t it possible that at times, there are folks (ourselves included) actually taking the Lord’s name in vane when they say “Merry Christmas” by throwing around Christ’s name without a second thought?

our church decorate her home for Christmas! We will meet in The BOX immediately
after worship on Sunday morning.  Lunch will be provided.  After
lunch we will go serve this special GBC member and then return to GBC at 4:15.
There will be NO other Sunday night meeting!

1.  Thanksgiving week- there will be a family friendly worship service at the church Wed, Nov 23rd at 7:00pm.

2.  Christmas Eve- there will be a family friendly worship service at the church: Saturday, Dec 24th at 5:00pm.

3.  Christmas Morning- for those who come on Christmas Eve, there will be “church in a box”… a gift for you to take home and open that Sunday morning.  At 10 or 10:30 (or whenever you can do it) we will worship the Lord together but in our separate locations.

We trust that you will have a wonderful holiday and keep centered on Christ.

And my question to you is, “How would you answer that question?”

If it is a question of numbers, than that is a bit simpler to answer.  Typical Sunday attendance runs 300-360 people, but probably over 400 call GBC their home.  Membership wise the number is a bit smaller, but that 330 number is what we see regularly.  So, that number means… what exactly?  Perhaps there are some who think we are a small church.  Certainly if they come from a church of 3500 people then we feel quite small, but on the other hand, to other people (like the woman I talked on Friday) our church is “so big”.  It really is quite interesting how people interpret those numbers.

So, the question remains, how big are we? Numbers are nice, but they don’t say everything.  Perhaps, our size should be more about the extent of our reach or perhaps our diversity or our mission?  How big is this church?

I guess I can’t say for sure how big we are, but I can tell you this… last week Brian and I prayed for a young man from Bolivia headed into surgery.  The next day I took 20 amazing middle schoolers to the Extreme Bounce Zone.  The following day, I spent some time with some of our 93 year old homebound seniors and listened as the wife told me about her family coming over from Norway on a boat.  Then Friday, I met in one of our member’s homes with my new small group (it was very cool, btw), and later that evening spoke at a home Bible study to 20-30 Taiwanese people (primarily students) at the request of one of our people.  Saturday, I headed to the “big house”, and I saw another one of our church members working the game and bumped into another friend from my last church.  Then on Sunday, I sat among 40-50 new friends from all over this country and even world at the “new attendees” lunch.

So, how big are we?  I am not sure how big our church is, but I do know that we serve a big God.  And ministering to His people in Ann Arbor is an honor and a privilege.

As we opened the word together, it was abundantly clear that it wasn’t just the people that were related to me in the congregation that were my family.  I looked out at a crowd of people that aside from Christ would be complete strangers.  In that room were represented a mixed bag of ages, life stages, races, and economics.  And yet… as we looked in the Word, I saw the eyes, the nods, the understanding.  It was like looking at one of my sisters and recognizing that there is a striking resemblance between us.  In that large room there was a striking resemblance between those in the seats and the new guy on the stage.  We have, perhaps very little in common except the only thing that matters… blood… the blood of Jesus.  And that is everything, isn’t it?  No matter how different a family member is, they are still your blood.

So here is my question, what church are you going to spend time praying for this week… other than GBC?  Is there a church in Ann Arbor or one in Minnesota or California or in Portugal or Japan that preaches the blood of Christ that you can uphold in prayer this week?  They are our brothers and sisters… strangers being made into a perfect family by our savior.

High School– Sunday Night– BE THERE!!!

This Sunday night, the High School group will be doing a service project together.  We will meet at our normal time and will work on Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes that we will send out as a youth group.  We would ask each student to prayerfully consider bringing some money for purchasing supplies ($5 per teen would be an ideal starting point).  However, you are encouraged to come and participate even if you are unable to bring any money.  Parents, if you would like to donate to this cause, that would be greatly appreciated as well.  Cash and/or Shoebox supply donations are appreciated.  The plan is to meet at the Box, divide into teams, shop for supplies, put the Boxes together, write notes to children, and spend time as a group using what we have been given to make Christmas special for a few needy children in our world.  Don’t miss this opportunity to serve together!

Dare to Share Evangelism Training Conference

Where: Chicago, IL

When: April 13-15

How Much: $85 (includes transportation, conference, lodging in hotel,
and some meals)

Important Details: You must register and pay $45 deposit by Nov 16 to get the cheaper price.  After the 16^th, cost goes up $10.

Why: Outside of snow camp, I consider this event/weekend to be the most valuable thing we will do in high school ministry this year.  Please commit early and don’t miss the opportunity to be trained how to better share and defend your faith.

A Word about Snow Camp–

Snow Camp is a MAJOR activity for ALL GBC Youth. It is often a time of huge spiritual growth for our group and is also an awesome outreach tool. Every year we have teens make eternal decisions for the Lord during this special weekend. You don’t want to miss it!

What’s new with Snow Camp this year?

#1 For the first time this year, HS and MS will go to Snow Camp the same weekend at the same location. However, we will be registered as two different groups, with different accommodations and varied activities. This year both Groups will go to Lake Ann Baptist Camp on Feb. 3-5, 2012

#2 A CHARTER BUS!!!!! This year, we will be riding to Snow Camp via a Charter bus!

Fine print alert–ONLY THE FIRST 50 TEENS TO REGISTER WILL BE ABLE TO RIDE THE BUS . The remainder will ride in the church van.

So, what do I need to do??

Register by paying your deposit AND returning the Lake Ann permission slip  ASAP– and invite your friends to come and have them register and pay the deposit ASAP-

How do I register?

Payment can be made two ways–

#1 Go to the home page of this website and Click Event Registration and then to Snow Camp– you may pay with your debit card, credit card, or electronic check.

#2 You may write a check to GBC and place it in one of the black mailboxes. (one is located outside of Pastor Adam’s office. The other is in the BOX.)

#3 You MUST also fill out the Lake Ann Registration Form available under Ministries–Teen on this website.

Fine print alert– both your deposit  AND the Lake Ann Form are required for full registration and a reserved seat on the charter bus!!

Cost? -

deposit by 10/26: $50

deposit after 10/26: $60

final payment: $80 (total cost $130/$140)

Fine print alert– Deposit for GBC Snow Camp is NON-REFUNDABLE.

Do I need anything else??

Yes– you will NOT be fully registered until you have completed a Lake Ann Permission slip (and a GBC one, if you have not previously done so). Both forms are available on this website under Ministries– Teen. You may FAX (734-663-3893), Scan to cburgener@gracea2.org , or turn in your form to one of the black mailboxes.(one is located outside of Pastor Adam’s office. The other is in the BOX.)

Fine Print Alert– you will not be considered fully registered until both forms are in the church office and your deposit is received. We are now accepting permission slips via scan or FAX as well as those put in the black mailboxes.
